If you want a way to keep fit and make friends, it is worth considering becoming a cheerleader. There are plenty of opportunities to both support other sports teams and to compete for your own group. It is not as expensive as you may think, as the clothes you need can be bought cheaply, such as cheap cheerleading uniforms.

The first thing you need to do is find a squad. There may be just one place, or there could be a larger number of people to audition. Look for advertisements of auditions, or contact the captain to express your interest.

At your audition, you may be required to follow a short routine and perform it, either alone or with other people auditioning. You may also need to perform a routine with your own choreography, but it is likely that you would be told about this in advance. Skills like the splits will usually impress the person responsible for admissions.

It can be hard to learn how to tumble. Professional guidance will lessen the risk of injury and will increase your confidence for the audition. This could be through an alternative sport like gymnastics, or you could join a cheer skills class that will prepare you for joining a performance team. There you can be taught how to perform a basic tumble, and if the class is connected with the team they could help you with general tips about how to impress.

After you join, you will be expected to look the part. The outfit will usually be a skirt, top and shorts to wear underneath. In the winter you may also like to wear a long sleeved top to go underneath your cheer top, especially for cheering outdoors at games.

Hair bows are also increasingly popular. These can be worn either with your hair up or down, so it can be suited to both competitions and sports appearances. The colour you need will be specified by your coach or captain.

Most of the events you attend will require you to wear your uniform. However, there may be exceptions, for example competitions. At later stages of the process when you have made your mark with your normal outfit, the squad may then choose to switch to a costume that thematically suits the music and style of dance moves, as this is sure to make the performance memorable.

Footwear is another important consideration. Trainers are the best thing to wear for training purposes, as you can dance as well as tumble. Usually the specified colour is white, but most squads will allow some room for logos, meaning you can search around for the cheapest deals.

Becoming a cheerleader is sure to bring you fun, friends and fitness, and it does not have to be expensive. Cheap cheerleading uniforms, bows and trainers are widely available. Consider urging the coach or captain to buy in bulk so that they can be sold cheaply to individual members of the team.
