Small communities often wish to stay small, but they also wish to gain the attention of a wider tourist group. One way small communities around the world have received recognition as a destination for vacation-goers is through sporting events at the Olympics. It is very possible that the Etobicoke Volleyball League may achieve just that goal for the little borough which carries that name.

Located on the beaches of Lake Ontario in the Ontario Province in Canada, this is a small community within a larger city. This is a community few people in the world are familiar with, but through media coverage of the Olympic Games, they hope to draw new visitors. Anyone who travels to Toronto may appreciate the small-town feel, and wish to book their hotel room in this small borough.

For visitors to the region, some of the most acclaimed shopping in Toronto is located on these streets. Visitors are encouraged to embark on their journey around October and November so they can get all their Holiday shopping done. They maintain a clean city with a friendly, small-town atmosphere that visitors love; making it a comfortable place to inhabit while taking in the sites.

There are coaches who teach everyone from small three-to-five year-old kids on up to teens and young adults training for Olympic dreams. Elite programs exist for these athletes, preparing them to be on a winning team. Professional players from their national teams are in on it as well, helping to train and prepare many young Olympic hopefuls.

Having a sporting event place a community on a stage benefits everyone equally. Young people watching the Olympic games take place often learn about countries and cities they never heard of. School papers are written about these athletes, complete with a historical narrative and geographical outline.

In this particular event, a great deal of attention has been paid to the female teams, and this has had a positive impact on the numbers of girls involved in sports. As a rule the media only covers sports played by all-male teams, but this is changing. Young women are seeing that college scholarships and Olympic rewards may be available to them.

Sports have often been an equalizer for members of other races and cultures, and now it is becoming a gender equalizer as well. In recent years we have been seeing more and more women and minorities taking their place in Olympic history, and achieving the fame and notoriety that it affords. More than ever young women are being encouraged to join sporting organizations.

Sports has always taught leadership, and now more than ever young people need the physical fitness. However, for many people it means so much more, and everyone knows how the Olympics themselves have always been a time-honored tradition bathed in beautiful ritual. The world needs more team spirit and sportsmanlike behavior, and it is always a welcome sight when a new town is added to the list.
