  • So just what is the best way to lose weight? There are so many diets and weight loss products out there that you would think we would be a nation of fit, slim, healthy people. Sadly that is not the case and around 90% of people who start a diet will fail. Do you ever stop to wonder why that is?
Obviously the thing that makes diets fail is that people stop them. They either cheat, or just abandon them altogether. Even when people have been successful and reached their weight loss targets they end up putting the weight back on again after they return to their old patterns.
The problem here is that a diet is viewed as a short-term fix that will allow you to achieve a goal and then stop. Chances are it will be perceived as doing without something and will not be something anyone would choose to do if they didn't have to lose weight.
That's the problem. If you are to achieve permanent weight loss then you need to think about making lifelong lifestyle changes.
The best way to lose weight is to consume less calories than your body needs. There are two ways to do that, eat less or exercise more. But you need to be a bit more targeted than that.
When it comes to diet you will want to eat a proper, balanced diet. That starts with fruit and vegetables - they really are the dieter's best friend because they are so versatile.
As well as being part of every meal you can easily build your snacking around fresh fruit and vegetables. You'll still need carbs, but try to stick to the unrefined, wholegrain varieties.
Don't forget milk and dairy products, but stick to skimmed or semi skimmed which contain all the calcium but less fat. The protein found in fish, meat, beans and egg are essential to maintain muscle body's growth and repair.
Experiment and try new recipes. Don't force yourself to eat things you don't like, but at the same time try new things. You may surprise yourself - you may find you prefer grilled peppers stuffed with couscous to a greasy hamburger. Speaking of hamburgers, cut out, or at least reduce foods that are high in fat and sugar. There are so many reasons to avoid them - not just for weight loss.
And don't forget to drink plenty of water. Speaking of drinking - what about alcohol? If you really must have a glass of wine, or a beer at night, then think about how you can incorporate that into your weight loss plan. Maybe you could have one glass instead of two or three.
Or you could try to reduce the level of calories by, for example trying a wine spritzer, which will reduce the amount of alcohol in your drink. Make no mistake alcohol contains lots of calories and will undermine your efforts so cut back even if you don't want to stop altogether.
Then exercise - think carefully about this one. To be effective you need to do something for around 30 minutes three or four times a week. Ideally you will incorporate a mix of aerobic and resistance training.
They do very different things and both are important. Muscles are your secret fat burning furnaces, so resistance training will continue to burn calories long after you stop. The most important thing is to find something you enjoy. There is no point at all in forcing yourself to do something. You will never stick at it - or even if you have the willpower to do so, you will hate it. Life is too short so why put yourself through that agony? There are so many things you could do.
Why not get your friends involved - you'll help to motivate each other. Walk, dance, skate, run, cycle whatever you do, just get out there and do it.
So there you have it - the best way to lose weight - eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise more. Then just stick with it and let the new slender, fit, healthy and confident you emerge.
